How to Get the Most Value Out of IT
|
Getting the most value out of IT can be challenging for today’s enterprises, for a number of reasons.
Technology Constantly Evolves: The internet has completely changed how successful businesses operate. And, the technology that drives it changes as well. Take internet marketing. It’s a cheaper way to market for many companies. Hence, they are pouring millions of dollars into it. But, in order to get the best results – as with any form of marketing – it must be highly targeted.
This means using technology to not only collect customer data, but comb through it to find what’s working and what’s not. And, the technology to track things like customer acquisition, attrition and retention is constantly changing.
Solution: A company should constantly invest in technology to keep pace with technological advances.
Business Needs Change: A business is a continuously changing entity. Like a growing child, it needs certain types of care and attention at certain stages. What works for a one-year old firm may put a five-year-old company out of business.
For example, take software development. When a firm is new, it may buy or lease the software it needs to function. However, as it grows, it may find that it needs to develop or customize software to get to the next level. This, of course, changes the demand put on the IT department.
Solution: The IT department is a multi-faceted entity: (i) it troubleshoots problems; (ii) it trains staff on new software; (iii) it develops new software; and (iv) it grants application access; among a myriad of other functions. This means it must be an integral part of a firm’s strategic planning – on every level.
IT Is Left Out of the Loop: Many businesses do not fully grasp the full spectrum of what IT does, especially in a Web 2.0 world. As such, they do not know what to ask of, or expect from, their IT department.
This could be why many IT departments are left out of the loop on many fronts and are only called in where there is an “IT problem.” However, IT is as central to a firm’s success as its finance department, for example.
Solution: To get the most value out of IT, a firm must understand what its needs and goals are, and why and how IT plays a part in helping to achieve them.
