I’ve been learning to snowboard for just over a week now, and while my experiences are fresh in my mind I thought I would share them with other aspiring snowboarders! The first advice I would offer (and most essential in opinion) before anyone hits the slopes has to be protection. Make sure you’re wearing impact shorts, a back protector, helmet and wrist guards because believe me you are going to fall over a lot and it is going to seriously hurt if you don’t. Of course this won’t guarantee no breakages but it goes a long way to preventing them.

As an absolute beginner, the hour of my first day on the Morzine slopes was spent having a lesson with the Ecole de ski français. Rudechalets, with whom I was staying, kindly arranged this for me. The teacher was brilliant, helping me stand up (it’s way more difficult than it looks!),teaching the correct posture and then we moved on to skating (having only the front foot in the binding) and then falling leaf (where you move from side to side on either your heel or toe side). After this lesson I felt confident enough to practice by myself and this confidence was helped by the fact Morzine provides the perfect conditions for beginners.

There are three individual nursery areas which provide wide, gently inclined slopes on which to learn the basics. The button lift staff are so friendly they even offer tips for improvement! The next day I had another lesson, this time with the Ecole de Glisse and this time we tackled chair lifts and tried to master the falling leaf and toe edge. I couldn’t have asked for a more patient tutor and after the lesson I continued to work on bending my knees and pushing my hips forward to nail the toe edge. As I progressed I slowly learnt to link turns on an array of easily accessible, sparsely populated and relaxed blue runs which allowed me to hone skills. The blue ‘proclou’ run that goes from the nursery slope was fantastically gentle for confidence boosting. From there I progressed to taking the Super-Morzine bubble from the centre of town and then the ‘zore chair lift onto the amazing Tétras run. It has the advantage of varying in steepness and wideness whilst never being too steep or narrow.

And some final priceless advice I was offered was to stretch every night - you will still ache in the morning but it will definitely improve the pain! I can highly recommend practicing yoga as there is an English speaking yoga class every afternoon and this helped to relax my weary muscles and stretch out the days exertions.

The facilities for beginners and the easy access of the slopes make Morzine the ideal location for beginners and the guidance that Rude chaletsprovided to help get me on my way was invaluable. Their chalets also provide excellent facilities such as an Xbox 360 in every room, a 42” plasma TV, media centre, table football, amazingly tasty food and super friendly staff.
